Trump hails India trade pact as catalyst for potential U.S. coal exports

U.S. President Donald Trump described the newly concluded trade deal with India as a breakthrough, saying it would sharply expand American energy exports, particularly coal, and reinforce the country's position as a leading energy supplier, The Economic Times reported.

"America is now the number one energy producer in the world...In just the past few months, we've made historic trade deals with Japan, Korea, India and others to increase our coal exports dramatically. The quality of our coal is supposed to be the finest anywhere in the world," Trump said at the "Champion of Coal" event on February 11.

His remarks came days after Washington released a framework outlining the path forward for the interim trade arrangement reached with New Delhi, which both sides see as a stepping stone toward a broader bilateral trade agreement.

Under the deal, the U.S. is expected to significantly cut duties on Indian goods, ranging from punitive levels of up to 50% imposed during earlier tensions to a reciprocal tariff rate of 18% covering sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, plastics, chemicals, home decor, and certain machinery.

For its part, India will purchase $500 billion of U.S. energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology products, and coking coal over the next 5 years.

Both governments view the agreement as groundwork for a comprehensive deal likely to be formalized in 2026, aimed at strengthening supply chains, improving market access, and stabilizing trade relations between the world's two largest economies.
