Thailand's thermal coal (incl. bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports stood at 1.39 million tonnes in October 2025, falling 15.91% compared to 1.65 million tonnes a year ago but gained 2.74% from the previous month, the latest customs data showed.

Bituminous coal imports amounted to 411,400 tonnes in October, falling 14.97% year on year and 16.52% from the preceding month. Most of the imports were from Australia at 276,600 tonnes, edging up 0.5% from 275,200 tonnes a year ago. Indonesia shipped 164,200 tonnes of bituminous coal to Thailand, ticking down 0.18% year on year.

Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 950,000 tonnes during the same month, down 16.34% year on year but up 15.08% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier, shipping almost all of sub-bituminous coal of 949,000 tonnes to Thailand, down 16.37% from a year earlier, while shipments from China were 676 tonnes, jumping 61.72% from a year ago.

Additionally, anthracite imports were 6,060 tonnes, soaring 245.1% year on year and well beyond 889 tonnes in September. In October, the country did not import coking coal.

In the first ten months this year, Thailand imported 15.27 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 1.37% on the year. Of this, bituminous coal imports totaled 5.50 million tonnes, up 6.59% year on year, while sub-bituminous coal imports stood at 9.77 million tonnes, dropping 5.36% compared to last year.

In January-September, Thailand consumed 23.45 million tonnes of coal (incl. lignite), down 0.34% year on year. Of this, power plant consumed 14.89 million tonnes, down 0.39% on the year and accounting for 63.5% of the country's total, according to data from the Energy Policy and Planning Office.
