Thailand Nov thermal coal imports rise 3.16% MoM

Thailand's thermal coal (incl. bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports stood at 1.44 million tonnes in November 2025, falling 3.84% compared to 1.49 million tonnes a year ago but gaining 3.16% from 1.39 million tonnes in the previous month, the latest customs data showed.

Bituminous coal imports amounted to 739,200 tonnes in November, jumping 36.9% year on year and 67.47% from the preceding month. Most of the imports were from Australia at 424,600 tonnes, up 15.7% from 367,000 tonnes a year ago. Indonesia shipped 314,000 tonnes of bituminous coal to Thailand, surging 81.92% year on year.

Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 696,200 tonnes during the same month, down 26.93% year on year and 26.72% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier, shipping almost all of the sub-bituminous coal of 696,000 tonnes to Thailand, down 26.74% from a year earlier, while shipments from China were 175 tonnes, well below the year-ago 2,286 tonnes.

Additionally, anthracite imports were 6,317 tonnes, slumping 51.85% year on year yet up 4.24% from October. In November, the country did not import coking coal.

In the first 11 months this year, Thailand imported 16.71 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 1.59% on the year. Of this, bituminous coal imports totaled 6.24 million tonnes, up 9.46% year on year, while sub-bituminous coal imports stood at 10.46 million tonnes, dropping 7.18% compared to last year.

In January-October, Thailand consumed 26.01 million tonnes of coal (incl. lignite), down 0.76% year on year. Of this, power plants consumed 16.59 million tonnes, down 0.87% on the year and accounting for 63.7% of the country's total, according to data from the Energy Policy and Planning Office.
