Indonesian state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) moved 1.57 million tonnes of coal in September, the highest in 2026 or 9% above August, the company said on October 12.

In the third quarter, KAI's coal loading and unloading volume reached 4.27 million tonnes, increasing 26% from the second quarter and 10% from the same period in the previous year.

President Director Yuskal Setiawan said the increase reflects strengthened operational capacity in supporting energy commodity distribution and reinforces the company's position in the national logistics ecosystem.

Yuskal said energy is a crucial component of industrial and economic activity, and that a smooth supply chain depends not only on commodity availability but also on a logistics system capable of ensuring reliable, efficient and sustainable distribution.

The improved performance was driven partly by higher volumes from a mining business permit (IUP) partner operating at the Muara Lawai terminal, prompting KAI to add four train sets. Each set comprises 55 flatbed cars equivalent to 110 containers and can carry approximately 2,300 to 2,530 tonnes.

Growth was also supported by new partners on the Tanjung Enim-Kertapati connection, which began operating in July 2026 and is projected to contribute up to 2.2 million tonnes by year-end.

Yuskal said the company will continue to increase capacity, productivity and service connectivity to meet distribution needs for strategic commodities while strengthening the national supply chain.
