Indonesia Jul coal exports fall for 2nd month, hit 5-yr low

Indonesia's seaborne coal exports fell for a second consecutive month in July 2026, reversing a year-on-year gain and hitting the lowest level for the month in five years.

Ship-tracking data from Kpler showed Indonesia exported 38.16 million tonnes of seaborne coal in July, down 6.87% from 40.98 million tonnes in the same month last year, when exports had surged nearly 20% year on year. The July figure was also 3.5% lower than the 39.55 million tonnes exported in June.


Exports to Asia, the dominant destination, totaled 37.85 million tonnes in July, down 6.86% year on year and 4.09% from a month earlier. Asia accounted for 99.7% of Indonesia's total coal exports in July, slightly above the 98.5% share in June.

China remained the largest buyer, with Indonesia shipping 14.23 million tonnes to the mainland in July, down 13.52% year on year and 15.12% month on month.


Exports to India fell 8.63% year on year and 7.67% from a month earlier to 6.27 million tonnes in July. Shipments to the Philippines rose 20.57% year on year and 1.93% month on month to 3.44 million tonnes.

Indonesia exported 2.59 million tonnes to Vietnam in July, up 52.19% year on year but down 8.37% from June. Exports to Japan totaled 2.29 million tonnes, down 21.82% year on year but up 34.19% month on month.

In the first seven months of 2026, Indonesia's cumulative seaborne coal exports reached 265 million tonnes, down 1.25% year on year. Shipments to mainland China totaled 102 million tonnes over January-July, up 3.18% from the same period last year.
