Indonesia's seaborne coal exports slumped over 20% in January from the month-ago high level and fell below the 40 million tonnes threshold, showed vessel tracking data from Kpler.

The volume dropped 2.51% from a year ago and 23.76% from a month earlier to 38.2 million tonnes.

Indonesia's coal exports to Asian countries reached 37.8 million tonnes in January, down 2.94% from the previous year and 22.81% from a month ago, accounting for 98.9% of total exports, higher than December's 95.9%.

Chinese mainland remained the top destination for Indonesian coal in the month with the shipment at 15.87 million tonnes, dipping 0.87% from a year earlier and slumping 35.49% on the month, data showed.

The country's coal exports to India amounted to 6.73 million tonnes in January, down 11.88% year on year and 8.02% month on month. Exports to the Philippines increased 21.02% from a year ago and 18.24% from the month prior to 3.36 million tonnes.

Exports to South Korea decreased 30.84% from a year earlier and 15.37% from a month ago to 2.19 million tonnes. Shipments to Vietnam rose 15.79% on the year yet dropped 6.3% on the month to 2.08 million tonnes.
