Indonesia's seaborne coal exports continued uptrend in August, posting a new high since November 2024, showed vessel tracking data from Kpler.

The country exported 47.7 million tonnes of coal in the month, rising 12.08% from a year ago and 17.4% from a month earlier, according to Kpler.

Indonesia's coal exports to Asian countries reached 46.4 million tonnes in August, rising 9.77% from the previous year and 15.78% from a month ago, accounting for 97.3% of total exports, higher than July's 96.3%.

China's mainland remained the top destination for Indonesian coal in the month with the shipment at 20.85 million tonnes, up 9.63% from a year earlier and 27.49% on the month, data showed.

The country's coal exports to India amounted to 8.84 million tonnes in August, declining 1.25% year on year but gaining 22.28% month on month. Exports to South Korea surged 70.72% from a year ago and rose 18.01% from the month prior to 3.52 million tonnes.

Exports to the Philippines grew 3.26% from a year earlier and 13.84% from a month ago to 3.17 million tonnes. Shipments to Japan rose 22.48% on the year yet fell 7.4% on the month to 2.67 million tonnes.

Indonesia's seaborne coal exports totaled 315 million tonnes in the first eight months this year, down 8.43% on the year, with Chinese intakes diving 16.72% to 119 million tonnes.
