India trims coal production amid high stocks and low power demand
India has slowed coal production amid high mine-mouth stocks and lower power demand, reported the country's news channel CNBC-TV18.
Nearly 100 million tonnes of coal are currently lying in pitheads, and only about 2.05 million tonnes of coal are being consumed for daily power generation, according to the report, citing government sources.
The sources also confirmed that India's peak power demand has been lower compared to normal, as rainfall kept the temperature cool and reduced thermal power demand.
In 2025, the country's peak power demand ranged between 240-245 GW, well below the 277 GW expected by the Central Electricity Authority.
Coal India Limited, accounting for 80% of India's coal production, saw its total coal output between April to October 2025 drop 4.5% year on year to 385.3 million tonnes, partially due to rising pithead coal stocks and plunging power demand in the country.
India's surging share of renewable generation may also contribute to the reduced coal output, the report showed. Earlier this year, the country achieved a remarkable milestone by generating 50% of its electricity from non-fossil sources.
