India churned out 77.43 million tonnes of coal in October 2025, down 8.33% on the year but gaining 13.57% on the month, reaching the highest level since July, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Coal.

Of that, state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 56.38 million tonnes of coal in October, falling 9.75% on the year yet climbing 15.13% on the month. India's another state-owned coal miner, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), produced 4.74 million tonnes of coal, down 12.06% on the year yet rising 28.11% on the month.

Meanwhile, coal output from captive and other coal mines dropped 1.75% on the year yet rebounded 5.29% on the month to 16.32 million tonnes.

Over the first seven months of the current fiscal year (April-October 2025), India's total coal production dipped 2.02% on the year to 527 million tonnes. CIL's and SCCL's output stood at 386 million (-4.53% YoY) and 32.63 million tonnes (-3.6% YoY), respectively. Coal output from captive and other coal mines rose 8.72% to 108 million tonnes.

In October, India sold 80.44 million tonnes of coal, sliding 4.75% year over year. Coal sales of CIL and SCCL came in at 59.19 million (-5.35% YoY) and 4.60 million tonnes (-14.1% YoY), respectively, while that from captive and other coal mines edged up 0.51% to 16.65 million tonnes.

India sold 566 million tonnes of coal during April-October, down 1.2% from the year prior. Among this, CIL sold 416 million tonnes of coal, down 3.13%. SCCL sold 33.38 million tonnes of coal, down 3.9% on the year. Coal sales from captive and other coal mines totaled 117 million tonnes, up 7.28% on the year.

In October, the nation supplied 51.76 million tonnes of coal to the power sector, dropping 24.59% year on year, accounting for 64% of its total sales. The country also shipped 0.25 million tonnes of coal to the steel sector, slumping 75.68% on the year, and delivered 0.62 million tonnes to the cement sector, a 11.3% increase.
