India Jun state-port coal imports hit 4-mth low

India's major state-run ports saw coal imports fall to a four-month low in June, with volumes also edging down from a year earlier.

The 12 major state ports handled 16.48 million tonnes of coal in June, down 0.68% from 16.59 million tonnes a year earlier and 11.84% lower than 18.69 million tonnes in May.


Thermal coal imports at these ports totaled 11.37 million tonnes in June, down 2.35% year on year and 7.62% month on month. Coking coal imports stood at 5.11 million tonnes, up 3.28% from a year earlier but down 19.97% from the previous month.

Among individual ports, Paradip on India's east coast handled the most thermal coal in June at 4.75 million tonnes, up 4.88% year on year and 5.39% month on month.

Paradip also received the largest volume of coking coal at 1.62 million tonnes, up 9.48% from a year earlier but down 12.36% from May.

In the first three months of the fiscal year (April-June), India's state ports imported a total of 52.40 million tonnes of coal, up 2.56% year on year. Thermal coal imports reached 35.58 million tonnes, up 1.52%, while coking coal imports totaled 16.82 million tonnes, up 4.86%.

Total cargo throughput at the 12 major state ports reached 234 million tonnes in June, up 6.09% from 220 million tonnes a year earlier. Kandla port recorded the highest cargo volume at 42.76 million tonnes, up 12.7% year on year.

The 12 major state ports include Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, V.O. Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.A. and Kandla.
