India Dec coal output increases past 100-Mt mark
India's coal production climbed for the third straight month in December 2025, crossing the 100-million-tonne threshold, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Coal.
The nation churned out 101 million tonnes of coal in the month, up 3.66% on the year and 9.46% on the month, reaching the highest level so far this fiscal year, data showed.
Of that, state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 75.67 million tonnes of coal in December, up 4.56% on the year and 10.3% on the month. India's another state-owned coal miner, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), produced 5.75 million tonnes of coal, down 13.01% on the year yet rising 7.68% on the month.
Meanwhile, coal output from captive and other mines increased 5.98% on the year and 3.46% on the month to 20.02 million tonnes.
Over the first nine months of the current fiscal year (April-December 2025), India's total coal production dipped 0.63% on the year to 722 million tonnes. CIL's and SCCL's output stood at 529 million (-2.61% YoY) and 43.73 million tonnes (-6.5% YoY), respectively. Coal output from captive and other coal mines rose 9.4% to 149 million tonnes.
In December, India sold 90.17 million tonnes of coal, sliding 2.64% year over year. Coal sales of CIL and SCCL came in at 65.95 million (-3.81% YoY) and 5.67 million tonnes (-1.99% YoY), respectively, while that from captive and other coal mines rose 1.57% to 18.56 million tonnes.
India sold 742 million tonnes of coal during April-December, down 1.25% from the year prior. Among this, CIL sold 546 million tonnes of coal, down 2.84%. SCCL sold 44.17 million tonnes of coal, down 4.35% on the year. Coal sales from captive and other coal mines totaled 152 million tonnes, up 5.67% on the year.
In December, the nation supplied 69.55 million tonnes of coal to the power sector, dropping 6.99% year on year, accounting for 77% of its total sales. The country also shipped 1.57 million tonnes of coal to the steel sector, surging 60.69% on the year, and delivered 0.86 million tonnes to the cement sector, a 20.16% increase.
