China unveils 2026-2028 carbon footprint standards plan
China has rolled out a three-year action plan to build a national system of product carbon footprint standards, targeting more than 100 national standards across five key sectors.
The plan, jointly issued recently by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Energy Administration, covers the 2026-2028 period, according to a statement released by the market regulator.
The standards will focus on energy, raw materials, consumer goods, machinery and equipment, and transportation tools, with some national standards to be developed in parallel with international standards.
The plan aims to achieve basic coverage of national carbon footprint standards for key basic energy products, raw materials and intermediate products that play a prominent role in industrial and supply chains, the statement said.
The move is intended to support the green and low-carbon transition of key products and help Chinese industries respond to changes in international trade rules, it added.
The State Administration for Market Regulation said it would work with relevant departments to implement the plan and provide technical support for the economy's green transition.
