China achieves breakthrough in hydrogen-coal co-firing
On June 7, a large-capacity pilot-scale hydrogen-coal co-firing test facility developed by Yantai Longyuan Power Technology, a subsidiary of CHN Energy Technology & Environment Limited, has for the first time achieved both 50 percent green hydrogen co-firing and 100 percent pure hydrogen combustion.
The test was conducted at the 40-megawatt Boiler Clean Combustion Engineering Laboratory. It employed a fully self-developed low-NOx burner for hydrogen-coal co-firing and established a comprehensive safety protection system covering the entire process from hydrogen delivery to in-furnace combustion. The facility enables hydrogen and pulverized coal to mix thoroughly and burn together inside the boiler, achieving hydrogen co-firing at a 50 percent heat input ratio in a 40-megawatt coal-fired boiler, a world-first application of its kind. The technology can not only reduce coal consumption and carbon emissions by 50 percent but also significantly cut nitrogen oxide emissions.
Produced using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, green hydrogen emits only water when burned, making it a typical zero-carbon fuel. This scientific achievement provides a viable technological pathway for large-scale carbon reduction at China’s existing coal-fired generating units and is of great significance for advancing the green and low-carbon transformation of coal-fired power generation and promoting the integrated development of coal power and renewable energy.
