Vietnam's coal imports (including those from foreign-invested enterprises) in August 2026 retreated notably to the lowest level since March this year, preliminary customs data showed. The year-on-year growth also narrowed.

The country imported 5.08 million tonnes of coal in August, rising 18.34% from 4.30 million tonnes in the same month last year but diving 30.34% from 7.30 million tonnes a month ago, data showed.

Indonesia was the top supplier in the month, delivering 1.98 million tonnes, gaining 5.92% from a year earlier but falling 35.63% on the month.

Vietnam imported 1.67 million tonnes of coal from Australia, jumping 53.24% on the year but declining 8.90% month on month.

Russia delivered 1.11 million tonnes of coal to Vietnam last month, climbing 90.88% on the year but sliding 33.82% on the month, while imports from Laos stood at 71,718 tonnes, retreating 67.93% from the year prior and 61.19% from a month earlier.

The data showed that Vietnam's coal import value in August amounted to $720.31 million, increasing 91.15% year on year but sliding 25.84% month on month.

Vietnam's coal imports totaled 52.50 million tonnes in the first eight months in 2026, climbing 10.41% from a year ago. Total import value came in at $6.35 billion, growing 34.82% on the year, data showed.
