Renewable energy output hits new record in Inner Mongolia

Renewable power generation in central and western Inner Mongolia reached a historical high on January 8, according to the local grid operator Inner Mongolia Power (Group) Co., Ltd, marking a significant milestone in the region's green energy transition.

At 12:23 pm that day, renewable power output soared to 38.51 GW, accounting for 76% of the grid's total instantaneous load, the company said. This meant three out of every four KWh of electricity came from renewable sources.

The achievement follows closely on the heels of a previous record of 35.89 GW set just on January 6. Bolstered by Inner Mongolia's robust green power supply, the maximum renewable generation in the North China grid, a major outlet of Mongolian power supply, also smashed a new high of 184.56 GW on January 8.

Notably, during the peak renewable output period, the Inner Mongolia grid's new energy storage systems were charging at a rate of 9.51 GW, facilitating the high proportion of renewable energy integration. Backed by a large-scale and concentrated deployment of new projects commissioned by the end of 2025. The new energy storage capacity has reached 13.67 GW so far, surging nearly 10 GW from a year ago. Independent new energy storage amounted to 10.20 GW.

The utilization efficiency of these systems is steadily improving, evidenced by a separate record charging power of 9.63 GW on January 4. These new storage facilities, as massive power banks, provide a reliable support for the Inner Mongolia grid's transition towards green, low-carbon operations and the construction of a new-type power system.

To support this transition, the group and its subsidiaries will fully tap into the grid's flexible regulation potential, actively promote the deeper application of energy storage and innovations in market mechanisms. These efforts are designed to ensure safe and stable operations of the power grid in Inner Mongolia and efficient integration of renewable energy.

Power grids in Inner Mongolia are operated by two major companies. Inner Mongolia Power Group mainly covers central and western Inner Mongolia, while State Grid Inner Mongolia Eastern Power operates the rest in the east.
