Malaysia engages Indonesia on coal supply amid production cut
Malaysia held talks with Indonesia on February 11 regarding coal supply, following Indonesia's decision to reduce production this year. The discussions come after the world's largest thermal coal exporter announced a planned cut in output.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof confirmed that the issue was raised in separate meetings with Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, and President's Special Envoy for Energy and Climate, Hashim Djojohadikusumo.
"Currently, Indonesia is supplying coal to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), so we want to clarify the changes in policy and strategy in Indonesia," Fadillah said. "We hope this will not affect coal supplies to Malaysia."
Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, is on a three-day visit to Jakarta, which began on February 10, aimed at strengthening energy sector collaboration between the two nations.
Indonesia's government previously announced plans to cut coal production to 600 million tonnes in 2026, a 24% decrease from 790 million tonnes last year. The reduction is intended to drive up coal prices and ensure the sustainability of Indonesia's coal reserves.
The discussions between the two countries also included talks on the ASEAN Power Grid, the undersea cable project linking Sarawak and Johor, and extending the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Fadillah expressed appreciation for the support shown by the Indonesian leaders, saying, "Alhamdulillah, I thank Bahlil and Hashim for their understanding and readiness to support our discussions."
Regarding energy supplies to Indonesia, Fadillah confirmed that Malaysia is prepared to cooperate further, should there be any requests from its neighbor. He also highlighted that Sarawak currently supplies 100 megawatts of electricity to West Kalimantan.
