Indonesia's Coal Production Nears 600 Million Tons
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's coal production is nearing the 600 million tons quota, but the country is not shutting down the chance to raise production volumes as commodity prices fluctuate, said Tri Winarno, the Energy Ministry's Mineral and Coal director general.
"We nearly reach 600 million tons," he said when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources office on Monday, April 6, 2026.
According to him, the relaxation of coal production volumes is intended to maintain the state revenue balance through royalties.
But Tri said the relaxation mechanism could not be decided before the production figures are outlined under the 2026 Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) are determined.
"We'll keep it back down if we detects over-supplies," he added.
Earlier, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that coal and nickel production would be cut in 2026. This step is taken to maintain market prices, as coal prices are on the decline.
According to Bahlil, excessive production causes commodity prices to drop. As a result, entrepreneurs need to obtain fair prices while the country also receives appropriate income.
"The amount of coal traded is only about 1.3 billion tons. Indonesia supplies around 500-600 million tons, nearly 50 percent of that," Bahlil said in a press conference at his office on Friday, December 19, 2025.
