India Jan coal output rises for 4th mth to new high in FY26
India's coal production increased for the fourth consecutive month in January and surpassed 100 million tonnes for the second month in a row, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Coal.
The nation churned out 108 million tonnes of coal in the month, up 3.34% on the year and 6.44% on the month, recording a new high so far this fiscal year, data showed.
Of that, state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 79.81 million tonnes of coal in January, up 2.6% on the year and 5.47% on the month. India's another state-owned coal miner, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), produced 5.16 million tonnes of coal, down 25.97% on the year and 10.26% on the month.

Meanwhile, coal output from captive and other mines increased 16.63% on the year and 14.89% on the month to 23 million tonnes.
Over the first ten months of the current fiscal year (April 2025-January 2026), India's total coal production dipped 0.14% on the year to 830 million tonnes. CIL's and SCCL's output stood at 609 million (-0.53% YoY) and 48.88 million tonnes (-9.03% YoY), respectively. Coal output from captive and other coal mines rose 10.15% to 172 million tonnes.
In January, India sold 92.18 million tonnes of coal, sliding 1.37% year over year. Coal sales of CIL and SCCL came in at 66.85 million (-3.7% YoY) and 6.11 million tonnes (-0.16% YoY), respectively, while that from captive and other coal mines rose 7.28% to 19.21 million tonnes.
India sold 834 million tonnes of coal during April-January, down 1.28% from the year prior. Among this, CIL sold 612 million tonnes of coal, down 2.95%. SCCL sold 50.28 million tonnes of coal, down 3.86% on the year. Coal sales from captive and other coal mines totaled 171 million tonnes, up 6.11% on the year.
In January, the nation supplied 73.16 million tonnes of coal to the power sector, dropping 2.98% year on year, accounting for 79% of its total sales. The country also shipped 1.48 million tonnes of coal to the steel sector, rising 37.73% on the year, and delivered 0.95 million tonnes to the cement sector, a 4.09% increase.
