How will China's thermal coal market perform in Aug 2026?
Thermal coal prices are facing a pivotal moment in August as the peak summer demand season enters its second half, with the market having failed to deliver the long-awaited seasonal rally in July.
Sxcoal data showed the CCI 5500 index was assessed at 827 yuan/t as of July 30, down 14 yuan/t or 1.66% from the end of June, with the price center shifting notably lower despite intra-month volatility.

The market is currently balanced between bullish and bearish factors, with buyers and sellers locked in a standoff. Any meaningful breakout in August will likely hinge on extreme heat materializing from the El Nino phenomenon.
First, supply-side rigid constraints persist but recovery expectations are building. While safety inspections in key producing regions, particularly Shanxi, remain stringent and capacity release stays limited, recent signs point to faster resumption of mining operations in the months ahead. The actual domestic supply situation in August remains uncertain and warrants close monitoring.
Second, import coal continues to provide effective supplementary supply. Recent trends show import costs exceeding tender prices amid weak demand, signaling market softness. However, prompt arrivals at ports remain ample, giving domestic power plants a wide range of options. Despite uncertainty over future supply, most plants have coal inventories covering nearly the entire peak summer period, with import coal continuing to play a solid supplementary role.
Third, high inventories across midstream and downstream sectors are exerting clear pressure. Stockpiles at both power plants and transshipment ports are at elevated levels for the season. While destocking expectations exist, the high base, combined with stable long-term contract supply and import coal inflows, leaves limited room for spot procurement growth, capping upward price momentum. This was the core factor constraining thermal coal price gains in July.
Fourth, demand resilience persists but further upside is questionable. This year's hottest period extends to August 23, covering nearly the entire month. Although the northern regions will see muggy conditions ease after the start of autumn in early August, the "autumn tiger" heat in southern China remains formidable, keeping power loads elevated and coal consumption at coastal plants within the high range of the peak season. Whether significant incremental demand emerges will depend on the actual intensity of high temperatures.
In summary, both inventory destocking and demand shifts hinge on upcoming weather conditions. If August brings pronounced heat, the seasonal rally could still materialize; otherwise, the market will likely extend its pattern of lackluster peak-season performance. Attention should focus on the first half of August as the solar term transitions.
