China's largest solar power plant in coal-mining subsidence area begins operation
China's largest photovoltaic plant built on a coal-mining subsidence area has officially commenced operations in Lingwu, Ningxia, on February 28, marking another significant stride for the country's low-carbon transition, state media CCTV reported.
With a designed capacity of 4 GW, the facility features over 7 million solar panels spanning approximately 80 square kilometers of coal-mining subsidence areas, which are characterized by the ground subsiding and collapsing after underground coal resources are exhausted.
Upon full operation, it will generate 6.8 TWh of green electricity annually, sufficient to meet the yearly electricity needs of 4.5 million households, said the operator China Energy Investment Corporation.
Alongside that, the solar farm also helps to create a great many of new jobs and sustained regional sustainable development, boosting Beijing's ongoing efforts to achieve "dual-carbon" goals.
In 2025, China's new grid-connected PV capacity hit 317 GW, comprising 164 GW of centralized PV and 153 GW of distributed PV. By the year's end, cumulative grid-connected capacity had reached 1.2 TW.
