China imported 25.99 million tonnes of thermal coal (non-coking coal) in July 2025, marking the sixth consecutive month of year-on-year decrease of 26.52% yet increasing 8.6% month on month, according to the latest customs data. The imports were valued at $1.56 billion, falling 44.82% from a year ago but rising 1.44% from the preceding month, showed data from the General Administration of Customs.

The average import price was calculated at $60.19/t, diving 24.9% year on year and 6.59% month on month.

Total thermal coal imports stood at 194.92 million tonnes in the first seven months, 14.34% lower than the year-ago level, with the value down 31.04% to $13 billion. That put the average import price at $66.69/t over January-July, an 19.49% drop year on year.
