China Coal Imports Fall Further on Weak Demand, Domestic Output
China’s coal imports fell to their lowest in more than two years on weak demand and higher domestic production.
Import volumes dropped to their lowest since February 2023 in June, according to customs data released on Monday. First-half deliveries were down 11% from a year earlier.
The world’s biggest consumer and producer of coal has in recent months started selling more of the fossil fuel internationally. That comes as a prolonged contraction in real estate caused a slowdown in heavy industry and offset rising demand as a hot summer boosts demand for cooling.
Beijing has sought to avoid a glut of coal, which remains key to its power network and energy security. Domestic miners are expected to boost output by 5% this year to notch a seventh consecutive record, which is likely to outpace consumption growth and cap local prices.
Meanwhile, customs offices appear to be tightening scrutiny of low-quality shipments from abroad, with local news outlets reporting they blocked some cargoes from major exporters Mongolia and Russia after discovering excessive fluorine levels.
