India churned out 68.18 million tonnes of coal in September 2025, down 1.04% on the year and 2.42% on the month, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Coal.

Of that, state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 48.97 million tonnes of coal in September, falling 3.87% on the year and 2.84% on the month. India's another state-owned coal miner, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), produced 3.7 million tonnes of coal, down 1.33% on the year and 7.5% on the month.

Meanwhile, coal output from captive and other coal mines hiked 9.08% on the year and 0.13% on the month to 15.5 million tonnes.

Over the first six months of the current fiscal year (April-September 2025), India's total coal production dipped 0.66% on the year to 450 million tonnes. CIL's and SCCL's output stood at 329 million (-3.58% YoY) and 27.89 million tonnes (-1.97% YoY), respectively. Coal output from captive and other coal mines rose 11.77% to 92.94 million tonnes.

In September, India sold 73.97 million tonnes of coal, inching down 0.18% year over year. Coal sales of CIL and SCCL came in at 54.45 million (-1.05% YoY) and 3.74 million tonnes (-11.35% YoY), respectively, while that from captive and other coal mines rose 6.24% to 15.78 million tonnes.

India sold 486 million tonnes of coal during April-September, down 0.58% from the year prior. Among this, CIL sold 357 million tonnes of coal, down 2.74%. SCCL sold 28.76 million tonnes of coal, down 2.02% on the year. Coal sales from captive and other coal mines totaled 99.85 million tonnes, up 8.49% on the year.

In September, the nation supplied 59.08 million tonnes of coal to the power sector, dropping 1.92% year on year, accounting for 80% of its total sales. The country also shipped 1.14 million tonnes of coal to the steel sector, up 23.55% on the year, and delivered 0.65 million tonnes to the cement sector, a 5.49% decrease.
