Japanese chemicals firm Sumitomo Chemical plans to decommission its in-house petroleum coke-fired power generation unit and replace it with a gas-fired unit at its Chiba plant, located at Anegasaki in east Japan's Chiba prefecture.

The company aims to complete the replacement of the petroleum coke-fired unit with the 45MW gas-fired unit by the autumn of 2023. Sumitomo Chemical plans to continue using the current unit with an undisclosed capacity and petroleum coke consumption until the replacement is completed. It is also targeting to reduce more than 240,000 t/yr of carbon emissions at the Chiba site with the project.

Sumitomo Chemical also has plans by July 2022 for a 150MW combined-cycle gas turbine unit at its Ehime power plant in Niihama, located at south Japan's Ehime prefecture.

Japan imported 48.3mn t of LNG during January-August, down by 6.3pc from the same period a year earlier, according to finance ministry data. It bought 3mn t of petroleum coke over the same period, lower by 9.7pc.
